Indy 500 bag policy, prohibited items at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Jan 27, 2024Jan 27, 2024

The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 28, 2023.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway doesn't reveal attendance figures, but if you plan to be one of the estimated 300,000 fans in attendance, here's what to know about bags, prohibited items and fan policies at IMS.

Bags and coolers are allowed in for the race, so pack those snacks and drinks that aren't in glass containers. There is a size limit though, so make sure it doesn't exceed 18"x14"x15". Coolers can be hard or soft-sided.

You can also bring in a camelback, if you'd rather tote your beverage of choice on your back.

One more thing to note -= fans entering the garage or pit areas cannot bring coolers or alcoholic beverages with them.

Along with those coolers and camelbacks, you are allowed to bring in beer or wine. However, it must be in a non-glass container.

Hard alcohol isn't specifically mentioned on the allowed or prohibited items lists, so as long as it's in plastic you're probably fine. Maybe leave the top-shelf stuff at home just in case.

Flags and banners are allowed, but with some rules.

They can't obstruct the view of others or contain offensive material, and they are not allowed in concert areas. Keep the offensive material off clothing as well, or you may be denied entry.

Flag poles are also not allowed.

If you're a frequent visitor to IMS, this one might trip you up. Carts and wagons are allowed at the track every day except during Indy 500 race day. Collapsible ones are allowed, but only in certain areas.

Service animals, wheelchairs and other mobility devices are of course allowed, though security reserves the right to prohibit a device they deem a safety concern.

Strollers are allowed, but not in the concert pit or VIP areas.

You can bring your own lawn or folding chair, but standard-height ones won't be allowed into VIP areas or the concert pit.

You cannot bring a swimming pool into IMS. (Sorry, that would be pretty epic.)

Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, vaporizers or similar products will not be permitted in IMS grandstands. Fans wishing to smoke may do so 20 feet away from buildings and seating entrances. Smoking is allowed in the IMS infield.

You can't bring in marijuana in any form, or any other illegal drug.

Do not bring drones, selfie sticks, fireworks, skates, lasers and a host of other miscellaneous items that can be found here.
